The Pug harness is one that fits comfortably around their entire body. A body harness protects your short-snout dog from being suffocated or trigger breathing problems.

In fact, all the dog harnesses I share will work great for flat-faced dogs like Shih T’zu’s, Pekingenese and etc.

Best Pug Harness vs A Regular Leash

When I first got my black Pug, I purchased a regular leash, because that’s all I really knew. At the time Mindy was just a puppy and I was trying to train her to go on daily walks. Check out these dog seat belts and harnesses to keep your pooch safe while traveling in a vehicle.

As soon as I put the leash on her, she started pulling. Her pulling caused her to struggle with her breathing, that I had no choice but to look into alternatives.

After doing my due diligence, I chose to go with a harness. , Unlike a leash, the harness goes around their entire body and if they do happen to pull, it will not put a strain on their neck.

best harness for dogs that pull
We’ll discuss some of the best harnesses for pugs that pull.

Now let’s take a look at all the different types of harness available on the market.

All Types of Dog Harnesses For Pugs

With over 300 dog different dog breeds, it can be challenging to know what type of harness to get for your Pug. NOT all harnesses will work for a Pug, and it’s important to find one that is designed for their unique body type.

Here are some of the most common harness types you’ll want to consider when shopping for a new harness.

Step-In Harnesses

This is the one that I used for Mindy my black Pug. It’s easy to put on because your dog just steps in and puts their feet through the holes. Most dogs prefer this type because you don’t have to put anything over their head.

Dual Clip

This type of dog harness has both front and rear clip options, giving the owner much more control. The front clip allows you to guide the dog while walking, the back clip offers more control if the dog pulls or lunges.

Some dogs do not respond well to the webbed design, because it can make them uncomfortable and cause chafing around the shoulders. These can be more expensive and are mostly recommended for dogs that pull a lot.

Front Clip

Due to the position of the leash attachment, it makes it more difficult for the dog to pull. The downside is that the leash is more likely to get tangled around your Pug’s legs because of the position of the clip.

I’d only recommend getting a front clip if your Pug is energetic and suffers from the zoomies when walking.

Back Clip

This is similar to the step-in dog harness and the ring that the leash attaches to is on the top of the dog’s back. Dogs typically adjust fairly quickly to this walking apparatus.

The back clip harnesses are perfect for dogs that have been properly leash trained and do not pull.

Vest Harness

This is perfect for dogs that do not pull. They fit just like a piece of clothing and won’t cause any chafing under the armpits. Your dog won’t even mind wearing it all day, and the velcro or zipper makes it easy to put on and take off.

This is a great option if you don’t take your Pug for long walks and need something that’s easy and convenient.

Do Pugs Need A Harness?

All dogs regardless of breed need to be on a leash, especially, if you live in an area where leash laws are in effect. A harness or collar is an apparatus that allows you to attach the leash to via a D-ring, giving you complete control over your dog.

As a dog owner, this protects your dog from biting people or starting fights with other animals. It also protects your dog from getting run over or just wandering off and getting hurt or lost.

Flat faced dogs will be much more comfortable wearing a harness as opposed to a dog collar. Don’t, worry, I’ll be sharing some of the best flat face dog harness products on the market below.

What To Look For In Dog Harnesses for Pugs When Buying

A harness is a necessary accessory for your new furbaby. It will allow you to start training them and you’ll even be able to take them on a daily walk, without worrying about breathing problems.

Now let’s take a look at how to shop for your new harness and ensure it fits properly.

Make Sure That It Has A Snug Fit

Depending on your Pugs weight, you’ll want to make sure that the harness has a snug fit. You want the harness to be snug, but you should still be able to stick your finger into the harness. If you can’t stick your finger into the harness, it may be too snug and will be uncomfortable for your pet.

Easy to Put On

Make the experience of the harness as easy as possible for your pet. If it’s a constant struggle to get it put on your pet, they will hate it and will fight you every time you try to put it on them.

We ended up getting Mindy a step-in harness that was designed of nylon. When she was a puppy, we had one that was made with mesh and she loved both of them.

Find one that is easy to put on and take off. It’ll make your life easier and your pet will actually bond with the harness and will look forward to going for walks.

Make Sure It Has Some Padding

While the padding isn’t absolutely necessary, it can help protect your Pug if they do pull a lot. The padding can protect them from skin irritations that can be caused by the harness rubs up against them.

Personally, I never had to worry about this, because Mindy loved her leash and she never pulled once I switched from a collar to a harness.

Pug Harness Size

Pet supplies can be expensive and one of the best ways to ensure that you’re not overspending is to invest in one that is adjustable. While you won’t necessarily be able to use a puppy harness on an adult Pug.

Once you Pug becomes an adult, you should be able to use the same harness as they enter their senior years.

How Does It Clip-On?

Depending on how much control you want over your dog, the way it clips on will make a huge difference. A front-clip harness will give you more control over their behavioral issues. Back clip harnesses are easier to put on and will help protect their neck if they happen to pull.

Unlike the back clip harness, you won’t have as much control over their movements. But if you trained them properly, you shouldn’t have too much trouble with them pulling while walking.

Reflective Material

If you love taking walks in the morning or the afternoon, you may want to consider investing in a harness that has reflective material, which makes it easier for people to see your furbaby.

Affordable

There are literally tons of different pet products you can choose from. This can make it challenging for first-time Pug owners who don’t know what to look for, especially, if they don’t know what to expect from this breed.

Shop online and offline to compare prices. Scroll below as I’ve rounded up several of the best harnesses for Pug dogs that work great and won’t break the bank.

We took Mindy to Petsmart when we were looking to buy her a kennel and other essentials she would need. These types of stores don’t mind if you take your dog into the store. We ended up buying some brushes and her kennel at the store.

Is It Washable or Easy to Maintain?

Just like their pet bed, you’ll want to make sure that you find one that is easy to clean and maintain. Some people prefer leather collars and harnesses because they are easy to clean. All you have to do is apply a coat of polish and it’s like a brand new product. I personally like nylon because it’s quick and easy to clean up, plus it is resistant to odors.

Pugs are known to have skin allergies so make sure that you’re finding the right material that doesn’t cause any type of skin irritations.

Do You Want Something Trendy?

I’ve seen smaller dog owners with harnesses and collars that have custom designs on them. Maybe you’re a practical person and don’t care about trendy products?
