In fact, some breeds that have short-hair like Chihuahuas, Pugs, and Greyhounds need help staying warm during the cold winter months. In fact, it’s not unusual to see a Pug shivering if they are outside in the cold for long periods of time.

Short-Haired Dogs: Pugs fall into this category and while they have a lot of hair, it just doesn’t help keep them warm against cold and wind. Imagine wearing a light windbreaker outside in the winter versus a heavy coat!

Someone who lives in Minnesota will want to get a more insulated jacket than someone who lives in Louisiana. It all depends on how cold the winters get where you live. The factors you want to consider when shopping for the right dog coat are precipitation, wind, and temperature.
If you live in an area where it gets cool but not freezing during the winter, you may want to opt for a fleece jacket or a dog sweater to keep your pooch warm. For those who live in freezing climates. sub-zero weather, or windy regions, you’ll want to look for a dog coat that is constructed with breaking material.
For extremely cold climates, make sure that you choose a multi-layered jacket that has lots of insulation. A think windbreaker just won’t help keep your Pug warm in sub-zero temperatures.
Sizing & Coat Length
As I mentioned dog coats come different shapes and sizes for different breeds. You’ll want to find a jacket that is secure enough to stay on your pooch without being pulled off or drags on the ground.
Avoid getting a jacket that is too tight or hinders their movement. Otherwise, your dog will stand there like a statue because they can’t move.
So you want a long coat, down coat, or dog rain wear?
In order to get the right size winter coat for your Pug, you’ll need to know your dog’s weight, height, length, and chest size. Don’t worry, I’ll share the sizes below to help ensure you measure correctly.
If your Pug has never worn any type of clothing, you may want to consider taking your dog to PetsMart or Petco to properly measure them before ordering online.
Armpit & Neck Area
The armpit and neck area is where you need to pay attention to. Pugs are prone to breathing problems and you want to avoid getting one that is too tight and maybe uncomfortable for your pooch!
You want the armpit and neck area to be snug, but not tight. With my black Pug’s coat, we were able to fit two fingers through the material on the neck and armpit without any issue. I allowed to inches for comfort.
Make sure you allow for a little bit of leeway for comfort.
Just make sure that there’s not too much leeway or excess fabric which can cause objects to get caught in. The perfect fit will allow your dog to move around freely without any dragging fabric.
Reflective
If you live in an area with lots of traffic or in the city, you may want to consider a dog winter coat that has reflective strips to make it easy for oncoming traffic to see. Reflective strips also make it easy to keep an eye on your pup on those dark winter mornings.
It’s nice knowing you can walk your pup at night or in the early morning and still see them without having to search for them with a flashlight. (although it won’t hurt to carry a flashlight in the dark)
